I’m a Georgia girl and growing up in the country I was introduced to a variety of interesting tasks such as planting crops, working at my grandfathers’ fruit stand, and hoeing gardens. Friendships lasted a lifetime, work was hard and food was the best there is. As most people know, Georgia is the peach state and boy did my grandfather have his share of all kind of fruit trees, especially peach. We ate peach cobbler, peach shakes, peach jellies and jams, in fact we made so many items containing peaches we would often give most of it away.
When I was old enough to go to college it was a bitter sweet experience. I was going to a place that was 3,000 miles from the the place I called home all my life. There were many tears exchanged between me and my family members, but, to be honest, leaving my 80 year old grandfather was the hardest of all. I suppose my greatest fear was, due to his age, wondering if I’d see him again.
All of my family gave me a special gift to remember them by. My mom gave me the handbag I was wanting, my dad bought me a great used car, my aunt Ella baked me some cookies, and my grandma gave me a assorted basket of baked goodsand preserves. But I would have to say the most memorable gift came from my grandfather in the form of a recipe which brought tears to my eyes, it read:
To my dearest Peachy. Study hard and remember, don’t forget your peaches!
