Last Saturday was a bit of an adventure in food, as we tagged along with Mama Lucy for some lunch and dinner escapades. We kicked things off with a delightful lunch at Tiong Bahru, but by the time dinner rolled around, Twinkle and I had serious sushi cravings. So, we decided to give Genki Sushi another shot.

If you’re not familiar with it, Genki Sushi is a conveyor belt sushi restaurant chain from Japan. I’ve been here once before with Daddydoodledoo, and let’s just say, the experience left us feeling a bit meh. The prices were higher than expected, and the whole vibe didn’t quite hit the mark. But hey, we’re back for round two, because sushi is life, right?

One thing I do love about Genki Sushi is their ordering system. Instead of waving down a waiter, you just use a tablet to select what you want, and then, voila – your food arrives on a little conveyor belt train! It’s kind of like a sushi amusement park ride for your taste buds.

Now, Twinkle’s go-to order here is always the California Roll (₱210). I’ll admit, I’m not a huge fan of it because I found it a bit dry, like it had been made a bit too far in advance. But Twinkle loved it, so we’re all good. We also gave the Shrimp Roe Gunkan (₱190) a try, which is a type of sushi that’s basically rice and nori topped with salmon, sea urchin, or in this case, flying fish roe. It was fine, but nothing mind-blowing.

Daddydoodledoo had his pick of the Squid Taberu Layu Nigiri (₱160), fresh squid drizzled with taberu layu sauce (which is basically a spicy, flavorful condiment), and the Chub Mackerel Nigiri (₱160). He seemed pretty satisfied with his choices, though nothing seemed to wow him either.

But the real winner of the night? My Kyuri Unagi Roll (₱230). This roll had river eel, Japanese cucumber, and was wrapped in nori, topped with crunchy tempura flakes. The flavors were on point, and that extra crunch made it super satisfying. It’s one of those rolls that you’d be happy to order again.

While I really enjoyed some of the dishes, I can’t ignore the fact that Genki Sushi is still on the pricey side for what it offers. It’s a fun experience, but unless I’m in the mood for that conveyor belt action again, I think I’ll be on the hunt for another sushi spot next time.

Sushi cravings, though? Definitely satisfied.
