Are you having some troubles deciding which type of corner sofa is right for your home? Well, you are not really the only one who has this kind of dilemma. Whether you are buying a leather couch or a divan, you really need to decide carefully because it’s a big investment. In addition, a sofa can either improve the look of your living room or make it look cluttered if you pick the wrong one.
When buying a couch, there are a lot of factors to consider. There’s the style, texture, size, frame, and a whole lot more. If it is your first time to buy this furniture, the choices can be pretty overwhelming. Before heading out to the nearest furniture store, check out this handy sofa-buying guide.
- Inquire About the Joinery
When searching for a couch, it is important to know the types of joints that connect the pieces of your furniture together. Examples of sturdy joints are double wooden dowels, metal screws, or wooden corner blocks. In addition, ask if they are reinforced by staples and nails. However, never buy a couch that is only connected by nails and glue because they are not sturdy.
- Sturdy Frame
If you want furniture that lasts for a long time, you need to make sure that it has a solid frame. You can save huge amounts of money by buying a couch made from soft wood. However, it’s too wobbly and can warp easily. Couches made from hardwood like ash or beech can be pricier, but at least it can last for 10 years or more.
- Check the Fillings
For fillings, you have several choices. There is the polyurethane foam that is cheap and easy to maintain. You can also opt for high-density foams that are durable and soft. High-resilient foams are a little bit expensive compared to the two latter options, but they provide great comfort and lasts for a long time. Avoid buying sofa with polyester because it easily flattens out.
- Pick tough textiles
Keep in mind that a sofa is a type of furniture that is used every day. Cotton and linens are great choices because they are durable and easy to maintain. However, be wary of loose weaves because they can snag. You’ll never go wrong with synthetic microfiber. It can easily copy the textures of most fabrics and it is also resistant to stains.

Buying a sofa always freaks me out a bit. It’s sits in the middle of your room for years and I don’t want to make the wrong decision. Thanks for these tips — I’m sure it will make my next sofa buying experience much better.
Believe it or not our family sofa/s was the most difficult thing to get. I was so critical and discerning because I wanted something well-built, stylish, comfortable, can last for years but not look old, and yet still have a great price point! When I found them the manufacturer took a long time to ship it because they had to build it. But it is all worth it!
Thanks to your tips! Will definitely keep it in mind!
Our sofa is one year old already but the filling started to sag already. We are planning to buy Uratex, cut it and make covers and place it there.
