We all want to start eating healthier food, but it’s not always easy to control your portions, let alone manage the nutrient content of your food. The secret, as many health buffs will tell you, is in managing your food from start to finish – from choosing the healthiest recipes to picking the freshest ingredients and to managing the right portions. With the help of a new smart gadget and a smartphone app, you can now stay on top of your food, right from the comfort of your own kitchen.
Global smartphone usage is at an all-time high. In the Philippines, smartphone penetration is expected to rise to 50% by the end of this year, thanks to several cheap options created by some local phone manufacturers. Across the globe, Gaming Realms, the company that relaunched Free Bingo Hunter and optimized it for mobile phones last year, said that there were 1 billion smartphone users in 2012, but experts say this number could double by the end of this year as well. It only makes sense that smartphones have tied into everything, even food preparation.
Prep Pad is one of the more innovative smart devices to have been developed for the kitchen. Prep Pad is a smart food scale that allows you to not just set fitness goals, but keep track of them by managing your food intake. All you need to do is bring out the Prep Pad, set it up on your counter, and put the food you plan to consume on the scale. Prep Pad does more than tell you how much you’re eating – it gives you an accurate breakdown of carbs, proteins, fats, and essential nutrients, as well as a diagram of how it all plays into your eating habits.
Prep Pad’s companion app called Countertop, displays all this information as it’s sent from the scale via Bluetooth. The app keeps track of past meals and calories eaten, and even lets you scan barcodes for easy access to nutritional information. The app also lets you share your meals and progress with friends on Facebook and Twitter, and manage dietary information for up to three users.
Of course, this technological marvel is a little expensive, costing $149.95 (almost PHP6,700), plus shipping. But with the potential benefits, it could prove to be a wise investment, especially if you’re serious about managing the food you eat.

Yeah, I have to agree that it’s a bit pricey.
I agree! The product itself would be useful, but I don’t think I can shell out that kind of money.

Really cool thingy but I think Prep Pad is great for those who really want to meticulously calculate their food intake – those who are on a diet, among others.
I think if one’s priority is to calculate their food intake, then this wouldn’t be as pricey at all.
This is a very nice innovation but I agree that it’s quite expensive – specially for me since I don’t have a iPad/iPhone, I think this won’t work on Android devices, does it?
I think it works just as well.
