squash bread

This has got to be the softest, warmest, most delicious Squash Bread I’ve ever tasted…

I got to try it when we went to my cousins in Subic,Zambales a few days ago. They make this and sell it at their small restaurant called Green Tongue located at the Royal Subic Duty Free Mall.

Made from the freshest ingredients namely: squash, flour, milk and eggs. They form the dough into rolls and tucked in a bread pan then baked in the oven to form a loaf with a nice yellow color.

This is perfect fresh from the oven with just a pat of butter!

sandwich

They make it into a sandwich too and sell it at the same restaurant. So if you’re curious on how this bread taste like and you happen to be in Subic, just drop by Green Tongue. Grab yourself a loaf to take home, it only costs P100.

I may try making this sometime.I didn’t even attempt to get the recipe from my cousin because I know she won’t give it to me..LOL!

This is the recipe that I’m going to try.

Ingredients: {Adapted from Whipperdish}

2 Tbsp. dry yeast
¼ c. warm water
2 c. mashed and cooked squash {any squash will do}
2/3 c. warm milk
½ c. butter, softened
2 eggs
6 Tbsp. brown sugar
¾ tsp. salt
6 c. flour

Glaze:

1 beaten egg
1 Tbsp. water

Directions:

  • In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in water.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine squash, milk, butter, eggs, brown sugar, and salt; mix well.
  • Add yeast mixture and 2 ½ to 3 cups flour; mix well.
  • Add enough remaining flour to form soft dough. Knead until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes.
  • Cover and let rise until doubled—about 1 hour.
  • Punch dough down; divide into 2 loaves.
  • Divide both into thirds; roll each third into an 18 inch rope.
  • Braid into 2 loaves. Let rise again about 30 minutes.
  • Brush glaze over braids. Bake at 350° for 20 – 25 minutes.
  • Serve warm

I’m sending this over to Miz Helen’s Country Cottage.So glad to join again!
