I have wonderful memories with Duhat or Java Plums or Black Plums, whatever you call them. We used to have a really big tree of it in our frontyard in Novaliches. Every Summer, when the tree is full of the somewhat sweet-bitter fruit, my Tita Eva [aunt] would go up that tree and pick a bucket full of Duhat.

She would put some of it in a big bowl, wash it with water, sprinkle rock salt, cover the bowl with a plate and shake it vigorously for a few seconds. When the plate is taken off the bowl, you would see some battered duhats but the more bruised it is, the better it tastes. Tita Eva and I would then eat the Duhat one by one to our hearts’ content while she tells me stories about aswangs [philippine folklore vampire] and kapre.

Today, Duhat is said to be treatment to diabetes. Have you eaten Duhat? What are your childhood memories of duhat?

an entry for .Happy Weekend everyone.
