One of the famous food that the Filipinos are known for is the Balut.

Balut is boiled fertilized duck egg with a 9 – 14 day old embryo inside. It is commonly sold as a streetfood during night time by a vendor roaming the street and carrying a basket of warm Balut.and no, we are not in Fear Factor.

My favorite Balut vendor posing for me…*laughs*
Balut (P12/each)
Balut are eaten with a sprinkling of salt or sometimes dipped in spicy vinegar. The broth surrounding the egg is sipped before the shell is peeled off. Balut is composed of the yolk, the chick embryo and the white, which at this time has toughened. It is believed to be an aphrodisiac and is very nutritious.
I know, it doesn’t look very appetizing but it tastes really good. I love Balut but if I get one with a large duck embryo I don’t eat it and only consume the yolk.
